DIY: Olive OIl & Egg Hair Mask

12:19 PM

One area that I'm not very knowledgeable in in hair care. Of course, I do the basics, shampoo, conditioner, leave in conditioner, heat protector - but besides that, I'm kind of clueless.

Ever since I "ombre-d" my hair, the ends have been even more lifeless than normal. My hair is fine and brittle so it doesn't take much to make the damage from years of heat styling and colouring appear evident. So, this year I've decided that I'm going to put in more of an effort to bring my hair "back to life".

So, why not start with the basics?

A hair mask that has been used for years to help put moisture back into your strands and reinforce it with protein. Olive oil and egg. I know, it is quite a gross combination, but doing this mask once a week has been making a noticeable difference in adding some softness and shine back to my hair. (Disclaimer, I am NOT a hair person, so please don't hold me too accountable if this doesn't work out for you, but I hope it does!).

There are many positive claims for olive oil as a hair conditioner made by hair care lovers. The website "Olive Oil Excellence" outlines them here:

Benefits of Using Olive Oil on your Hair
  • Dandruff treatments – Dandruff is usually caused when the scalp becomes dry and flaky, causing those unsightly white flakes. Olive oil is a natural moisturizer. When massaged into the scalp it will moisturize your scalp, reducing the appearance of your dandruff naturally, with no chemically laden shampoos. Use the treatment as often as needed until the problem fades and then just once or twice a week to keep it from reoccurring.
  • Frizzy hair tamer – Dry hair is brittle hair and even just brushing your hair can cause split ends that turn your hair into a frizzy mess. Using olive oil on just the ends of your hair moisturizes those brittle ends, and will help smooth down the split ends, taming the frizz and the flyaway hairs. Use it after styling on just the ends of your hair to tame your hair. This works great in the winter when hair tends to be dryer and this solution is perfect for those who routinely flat iron their hair. When used after straightening your hair, olive oil will hold give moisture and a bit of weight to the ends, keeping your hair looking smooth.
  • Adds Shine – Healthy hair has a natural shine. Damaged and dry hair looks dull and lifeless but you can bring your hair back to life with olive oil. When used as a conditioner olive oil infuses your hair with moisture, restoring it to a healthy and beautiful looking shine.
  • Easier to Manage – Unhealthy hair is not easy to style; it is either limp or frizzy. Using olive oil as a hot oil treatment will make your hair healthy and manageable once again.
  • Softens Hair – Some people have hair that is rough and course. Weekly olive oil treatments are a natural way to soften your hair because it will saturate your hair with moisture
Egg, considered by many a superfood, is also packed with proteins and all kinds of good stuff. Read more about the hair benefits here. Although, I was personally kind of grossed out by the idea at first, but gave it a try anyways!

Step 1: Combine egg and olive oil (about 1/2 cup) into a bowl.

Step 2: Mix it all up!

Step 3: I used a bbq sauce-type brush to apply the mask to my hair. I find this isn't as messy/gross as using your hands.

Step 4: Apply all over your hair! You can also just stick to the ends if you want.
Follow up this step by wrapping your hair in Saran Wrap or a shower cap and leave for 1-2 hours.

Final notes: Make sure you rinse off this treatment in warm water, not hot! You don't want cooked egg all up in your hair. Follow with a shampoo and conditioner on the ends. Make sure you wash out very well!
