New Years Resolutions

I have always had a tendency (that I dislike in myself) to give up on things very quickly. The idea of holding myself to certain goals throughout an entire year just seemed like a big disappointment waiting to happen. Year after year I would see people posting things on social media about their "new year, new me" goals, and always got a knot in my stomach knowing that I just couldn't see myself following through with anything.

But hey, maybe I was writing myself off too quickly. The only person who can change my quitting ways is me.

So this year, 2015, I decided to do it. Make some resolutions, or "self improvement goals" and put my entire effort into keeping them. Not 100% saying that I will, but I am feeling more motivated than ever to put effort into self improvement. I think it's time to move into the self-actualization part of Maslow's pyramid (see professors, I listened!).

So, here they are...

1. Become a healthier person - Cliche, I know. But it really is an important goal of mine. I wouldn't say I'm the most unhealthy person ever, but I definitely have not been the healthiest. Any time in the past that I've been motivated to lead a healthier lifestyle it has usually been based around the idea of losing weight, but this time my focus is on treating my body better so I can be a happier, healthier person. If I lose a little bit of jiggle along the way, than bonus, right?

2. Practice yoga at least 4 times a week - This resolution directly supports the previous. To be completely honest, there are very few forms of exercise that I actually enjoy doing. Yoga is something for me that doesn't feel like the equivalent of going to the dentist, so I want to dedicate myself to doing it as much as possible. It's easy to do pretty much anywhere, even in this little apartment of ours. I've really been enjoying these videos by PsycheTruth.

3. Stay in touch more - Almost all of my friends and family live in different parts of then world than I do. Unfortunately, it's easy for me to get wrapped up in my daily routine and forget to send the quick little "hey!" text or give a quick phone call. It's so important to make these tiny gestures that can go a long way in maintaining a friendship. I want to make this a priority so I don't lose touch with all the people who are near and dear to me.

4. Learn new recipes and improve my cooking skills - I've always been fairly competent at cooking and baking, but I tend to stick to a lot of the things that I already know. This year I want to make it a priority to try out new recipes, whether I find them online or in some of my new cookbooks. Hopefully in the process I will pick up some tips and tricks to help improve my cooking skills that I can someday pass along to my kids (yikes!).

5. Get back into music -  For the longest time, music was one of the biggest parts of my life. No, I've never played an instrument, but I have always  been obsessed with finding new music to listen to and sharing it with the people in my life. I used to spend hours and hours scouring the internet for new bands or artists that would bring me such joy. Sadly, over the past couple of years this has kind of trailed off, to my own disappointment. This year I was to reinvent my love for music and continuously add new artists to my iTunes collection as the year progresses.

So there you go. Those are my resolutions. I really feel motivated to keep them this year, so hold me to it, internet world!
