Review: Sephora 'Beauty Amplifier' Loose Setting Powder

8:59 PM

A month or so ago, I was at Sephora, on the verge of splurging on the Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder. My concealer has been creasing a lot under my eyes, so I thought that maybe this could be a solution. As I made my way to the cashier, Laura Mercier in hand, I was distracted by a small display showcasing the 'Sephora Beauty Amplifier Smoothing Translucent Setting Powder.' Being the cheap(ish) gal that I am, I couldn't help but notice that the Sephora Powder cost $20 cdn, as opposed to the $47 that the Laura Mercier cost. So, I decided to give it a try instead.

Something I noticed immediately was the strong chemical smell. Its hard to even describe, so I'll spare you the attempt. I'd avoid giving the product a good sniff, if I were you. Plus, if you do that, you may run the risk of looking, um, questionable.

The second things I noticed was how finely milled the product is. It's the finest powder I've ever used, comparable to the consistency of sifted icing sugar. It even comes with a little sifter, which helps for a more controlled application. This consistency allows it to "set" cream products without looking super heavy or cakey. It is super smoothing, which is great.

But something else I noticed is that it can definitely leave a white cast if you are too heavy handed. While it's supposed to be translucent, I would avoid this powder if you are darker skinned, as it may leave you looking a bit ashy.

So while this powder has its flaws, I'm not mad that I purchased it. I definitely find that my undereyes look nicer now that I've been using it consistently. Despite the nasty smell, it does the job I was hoping it would, without having to spend $50.
